COMMUNICATION
Communication is the key for so many areas of life, this includes
swimming. Communicating often and not simply when a problem exists can
prevent most of the tension between coaches and parents. Getting
information firsthand and taking into account that the coach and the
parent don’t always fully understand each other’s situation should lead
to discussion and an understanding, instead of both parties moving into
a shouting match. The BAYS Swim Club has various ways of communicating
information to both the parents and swimmers:
Parent
Meetings
At the beginning of each season there is
a parents meeting conducted the first week of practice. It will take
approximately 1 hour or less and provides important “start-up”
information. The coaching staff and executive board suggest strongly
that at least one parent is in attendance—remember if you have a
question; others may have the same one. This is a great way to meet
other parents, arrange for car pools and get to know the coaches
philosophy of swimming.
Notices
and Mailboxes
We are starting a new system at our home
pool of individual folders for the swimmers and board members. Each
level will have a box with a hanging folder with the swimmers name on
it. This should be looked at every day by the parent or swimmer for
last minute notices, mail and awards. The board and coaches will have
their own folders for any communication that you would like to pass
onto them. Finally, there are notices and meet sign up sheets posted at
the white board—it is very important to also check this area daily.
Problem Resolution
Finally, if questions/concerns arise the lines of communication between
parents and coaches are always open. Make sure to express concerns or
ask about your child’s progress with the coach instead of your child.
Never complain about a coach to a child. The last dilemma your child
needs is to be caught in the middle between two adult authority
figures. Furthermore, if you have a problem or concern please do not
head to other parents to complain. Nothing destroys a program faster.
For swimming related concerns first contact your child’s primary coach.
If the issue remains unresolved, contact the head coach. If resolution
is
still not achieved contact the team President.> |
